So Who are the Spoilers?

Something stinks and it’s not rotten food. It’s Maine politics.

I’ve had a number of people tell me they are concerned that a “spoiler” in the gubernatorial race might give the win to the Republican candidate. They implied that I might be a spoiler in the 2026 race for governor.

Here are my thoughts.

If any candidates are spoilers they are the two major party candidates. Neither party has a majority of Maine voters. Neither party puts the people or the public interest first. Both parties’ number one priority is power for themselves and their favored special interests. The two major party candidates who will be on the ballot in November will try to “spoil” the election by taking it from any candidate who is running to represent all of the people.

Our state and federal governments are not of, by and for the people. They are of, by and for the parties. As our country is falling apart, we can see what this has done to our federal government. On the state level, it is obvious that the primary foci of many lawmakers are their party and themselves. Legislative votes are, with rare exception pre-determined by their political party, not based on what is best for the people and in the public interest. Party politics is destroying our state, as well. If you don’t believe me, stop in to a legislative session and see the political wall the two major parties have built.

The time for government to be run by the parties rather than the people has come and gone. It’s time for the people to exercise their power by running for office and by voting for the person rather than the party. We must not and we will not be forced to vote for the lesser of two evils.

Remember that the spoilers are not those who would run against the two major political parties. The spoilers are the two major political parties.
